She is also the author of Tax Topics, a regular commentary on current legislation and other tax issues. Prior to joining Bankers Trust Company (now Deutsche Bank) in 1997, she was in the estate planning department at U.S. Trust for 10 years, and had primary editorial responsibility for their estate planning publication, Practical Drafting. Ms. Christerson lectures to various planning and professional organizations nationwide, and is a frequent source for the media. She received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, her J.D. from New York Law School and her LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law. Ms. Christerson is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, the Bar of the City of New York and the American Bar Association; she is also the president of the Bagby Foundation for the Musical Arts. \n ------\n\n \n“Current Developments: New York”\nSharon L. Klein, Managing Director of Family Offices Services & Wealth Strategies\nWilmington Trust, N.A.\n \nThis session will analyze the latest developments in New York law. We will cover changes resulting from the 2015 Budget negotiations, including potential estate tax, estate tax “cliff,” gift add-back, state-level portability, and state-level QTIP developments. We will discuss the effect of new laws on trust and estate planning, as well as ongoing advocacy efforts to address estate and gift tax issues. We will also review other judicial and statutory developments, including legislation dealing with the disposition of digital assets, and the rights of children conceived after the death of their genetic parents with stored genetic material.\n \nSharon L. Klein has over 20 years’ experience in the area of trusts and estates and is a nationally recognized speaker and author on trust & estate issues. She has spoken for many professional organizations, including the Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning, the New York University Institute on Federal Taxation, the Notre Dame Estate Planning Institute, the Duke University Estate Planning Conference, and the Bloomberg BNA Tax Management Advisory Board. Sharon has been featured or quoted in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New York Law Journal, and Trusts & Estates Magazine.\n \nSharon serves as Co-Chair of the Trusts and Estates Law Section Taxation Committee of the New York State Bar Association and Vice-Chair of the Estate & Gift Tax Committee of the American Bar Association. She is a member of The Rockefeller University Committee on Trust and Estate Gift Plans, the Estates, Gifts and Trusts Advisory Board for The Bureau of National Affairs and the Professional Advisory Council of the Anti-Defamation League. She is the immediate past Chair of the Trusts, Estates, and Surrogate’s Court Committee for the New York City Bar Association. Sharon earned a BA and LLB from the University of New South Wales, Australia, and an LLM from the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. \n ------\n\n \n“Estate Planning With GRATs”\n Carlyn S. McCaffrey, Partner\n McDermott Will & Emery LLP\n \nThis session with focus on the creation and administration of grantor retained annuity trusts. There will be a discussion of the advantages of GRATs over sales to trusts, including sales for notes and the available techniques for minimizing mortality risks and future exposure to the generation-skipping transfer tax.\n\nCarlyn S. McCaffrey is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is co-head of the private client practice in the Firm’s New York office. She focuses her practice on tax and estate planning. Carlyn frequently lectures on subjects relating to tax law, trusts and estates, foreign trusts, and matrimonial law. She also writes extensively on these topics, and is the co-author of “Structuring the Tax Consequences of Marriage and Divorce.”\n\n Carlyn is a fellow and a past president of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel; a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel; a member of the International Academy of Trust & Estate Counsel; and a member of the Joint Editorial Board for Uniform Trust and Estate Act of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform Laws; a member of the Advisory Committee of the University of Miami’s Phillip Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning; and a member of the Adjunct faculty of the University of Miami Law School.
