Topic:  Lessons from Four Generation in the Family Enterprise

My Background:

I am a fourth-generation family business leader. I grew up in my family’s enterprises, worked on Capitol Hill, earned an MBA from American University’s Kogod School of Business, and came home to serve as CEO of Hill & Markes — growing it from $65M to $125M before facilitating a private equity exit in 2022 at four times the industry average valuation. I was the one who negotiated the end of a 115-year-old, four-generation enterprise, and that experience now shapes everything I do.

I founded Stride out of a need I experienced firsthand in my own family business — the need for peer support, trusted guidance, and access to the right resources at the right time. Finding the right estate planners, advisors, and professional partners was not always easy, and I knew other family business owners faced the same challenge. Stride Family Business Alliance is my answer to that: a peer community and advisory platform for multigenerational family enterprises in the Capital Region that connects families with the educational programs, peer relationships, and trusted professionals they need to thrive. I also work alongside Peter Begalla of JPB Consulting Group, where we partner on family business advisory engagements across governance, succession, and family dynamics.

Why This Topic Matters:

Family enterprise is one of the most rewarding — and complex — areas of practice. The technical work is sophisticated. The relationships run deep. And the conversations your members have with clients around ownership, legacy, and transition are among the most meaningful any advisor will ever have.
